The Sovereign 2020 Gold Brilliant Uncirculated Die Trial Piece
• A trial piece of a coin that was never released
• Features George III's cypher as a privy mark
• The Sovereign is often called the 'chief coin of the world' and is extremely popular with collectors
• Also features Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic St George and the dragon design
• Condition: As struck
Revived in 1817 in the wake of the Napoleonic wars, The Sovereign has acquired a reputation as the 'chief coin of the world'. Struck in 22 carat gold and tightly specified to four decimal places, it is trusted and respected wherever it is presented. The Sovereign 2020 features Benedetto Pistrucci's depiction of St George and the dragon – a design that is synonymous with our flagship coin. To mark the 200th anniversary of the end of George III's reign, all of the coins from The Sovereign 2020 Collection feature a special privy mark in the form of the king's royal cypher. Created by our product designer Kerry Davies, its size, style and placement were key to ensure it could be struck alongside Pistrucci's signature design. In heraldry, the cypher is a device that combines the initials of the monarch with their title. This particular mark combines George III's first initial 'G' with 'R', an abbreviation of 'Rex', which is the Latin word for 'king'.
