Made for a highly popular design befitting of our prestigious history, this die trial piece celebrates one of the most influential monarchs in British history. Credited with being a learned man and commissioning translations of religious texts from Latin into Anglo-Saxon, Alfred the Great's coinage was amongst the first to state exactly where it was minted – in London – and is therefore regarded as particularly significant in the history of The Royal Mint. Taking inspiration from the Alfred Jewel, a precious artefact that dates from Alfred the Great's reign, the experienced coinage artist John Bergdahl created an original design commemorating the king's life and legacy
