Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965), Prime Minister, 1940–1945, 1951–1955, the artist's original large plaster model [1966], by Stuart Devlin, signed SD, for a medal from a set of six gold medals of Prime Ministers, head of Churchill l., WINSTON CHURCHILL 1874 – 1965 around, 305mm. (SD p.298; cf Engstrom 66), minor stains and handling marks
The set of six gold medals featured portraits of Robert Walpole, Pitt the Elder, Pitt the Younger, Disraeli, Gladstone and Churchill. The reverse showed the crowned portcullis of Westminster with the inscription 'PRIME MINISTER OF GREAT BRITAIN'. The set, issued in 1966 (see following lot), was struck in 22ct. gold and carried the London Hallmark of Gerald [Adrian Sallis] Benney, CBE (1930–2008). The case of issue has the name 'Medallioners Limited' on the inner lid. Sold with two photographs of Churchill, supplied to Devlin from Central Press Photos Ltd, to help him with the commission.
