Australia, Britannica Australia Awards, gilt silver medal, 1964, by Stuart Devlin (for K. G. Luke), map of Australia amidst swirling oceans, cartouche for naming, rev. a thistle in flower, date 1768 below, 63mm. (SD p. 296), mint state
The Britannica Australia awards were established in 1964 by Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc. Medals were awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions associated with Australia in five disciplines: Art, Education, Literature, Medicine and Science. The thistle and date are explained by the facts that the Encyclopaedia Britannica was founded in Edinburgh in 1768 by Colin Macfarquhar, a printer, and Andrew Bell, an engraver. Its well-recognised thistle emblem first appeared in the 14th edition (1929).
