India. Tripura – silver tanka of Ratna Manikya (1464-1489), dated Shaka Era 1386, Rhodes-

Rev: Bangla legend Shri Narayana / Charana para / Shri Shri Ratna Man/ nikya Devah
Ratna Manikya initiated an independent silver coinage in Tripura, most likely drawing from
his experience in Gaur, the capital city of the Sultans of Bengal, where he spent some years
as a hostage. The style of the lion is evidently copied from the 'lion'-type tankas of Bengal
but the choice of inscriptions and invocations is decidedly not Islamic. On this type, the
obverse invokes Durga and attributes the issue of the coin in Ratnapura to the worship of the
goddess ('Durga – Aradhana') Alomost Uncirculated, Very Rare, Graded by NGC.
