Qing Dynasty. Xuan Zong (Dao Guang) "Tian Xia Tai Ping" Charm or Palace Cash ND (1821-1850) Certified 82(05) by Gong Bo Grading, cf. Hartill-26.3 (similar type from Tong Zhi's reign), Lockhart Collection-1570 (similar type from Qian Long's reign), CCH-410-411. 36.6mm. 18.6gm. The reverse reads: "Tian Xia Tai Ping" (Heaven Below Great Palace--or roughly, "Peace on Earth"). An intriguing amuletic type whose exact reasons for production are not entirely agreed upon today. In his Cast Chinese Coins, Hartill quotes the Register of Large Cash as stating "[t]hese coins were used as presentation in the Palace of Ancestor Worship, each wrapped in a piece of rectangular cloth. Each time an Emperor ascended to his ancestors [died], they were replaced with newly cast coins." Some have also proposed that they were made as gifts for eunuchs and guards of the Imperial Palace as part of New Year's ceremonies. Hartill further suggests that while some were manufactured by the Board of Revenue, others were privately produced. We have offered just two examples--both in the name of Wen Zong--previously, which brought $4800 and $6600 in our December Hong Kong sale. Each of those pieces were produced on notably thinner flans than the present example.
