China, Empire - 7 Mace and 2 Candareens (Dollar) n.d. (1911), Silver, XUANTONG 1908–1912, Provincial Coinage, YUNNAN Kunming mint. Dragon. Rev. characters.KM. Y. 258; L&M. 421The death of Guangxu required a new set of dies to be made for his successor Xuantong, in particular the 1 dollar (7 mace and 2 candareens) and the 50 cents (3 mace and 6 candareens). These were struck in 1909 and 1910, after which production abruptly stopped in preparation for the striking of national coinage. In 1911, however, the Xinhai revolution caused operations at the mint to halt, until the early years of the Republic, when the mint decided to strike with previously unused dies with the name of the previous emperor. The current theory is that these unused dies were actually specimen dies sent to test the machinery, both of which came from Germany. One circle below fiery pearl. 26.82 g. NGC AU Details, cleaned
