Russia - Jefimok 1655, Silver, ALEIXI MIKHALOVICH 1645–1676 Countermarked on the reverse of a Dutch Leeuwendaalder 1648 Gelderland. Mm. lily on reverse.Zander type II; Spasskiy – (date unlisted); cf. Spasskiy 220-225; cf. Delm. 826; V. 11.2; Dav. 4850.In the early 17th century Russian state-issued currency consisted almost entirely of small silver kopecks, while larger silver denominations in circulation were of foreign origin. These Thalers were generally passable for 50 kopecks. In 1654 tsar Alexey Mikhailovich began to reform the monetary system in Russia an began to buy and restrike foreign Thalers into Roubles, now valued at 64 kopecks, while continuing the circulation of the kopecks themselves. However, the re-struck Roubles were soon rejected.
In 1655 the mint began issuing re-stamped foreign Thalers again, but this time with only two small punches: the regular obverse die of a kopeck and the date '1655' in a rectangle. These new 'yefimki' were, like the failed Roubles of 1654, valued at 64 kopecks. Both the old Roubles and the new yefimki remained legal tender until early 1659, when they were demonetized and could be redeemed for new copper coin.
Almost immediately upon release for circulation the authorities feared counterfeiting of the yefimki. Especially the Dutch Leeuwendaalder or Lion Thalers, a Thaler-sized coin of notoriously low silver content, was targeted. These were called 'levók' by the people and were valued at only 38 kopecks. It could thus be quite profitable to falsely stamp Lion Thalers and pass them as full-value yefimok there. And while the yefimki were eventually demonetized in Russia, in Ukraine and Belarus a large number remained in circulation. Therefore we cannot say for certain when the imitation of yefimki stopped altogether.26.72 g. The countermarks are contemporary counterfeits
