Russia - Silver ingot 1880, ALEXANDER II The Liberator 1855–1881 With 5 separate stamps; double-headed imperial eagle and 4 smaller ones with fineness (96), initials A.K. (A. Keibel) and initials ФИ (unidentified essayer). With a respective weight of approximately 410 grams, the silver bar on offer here corresponds to the standard unit of weighing of 19th century Russia: the Russian pound or funt. For more accurate measurements a funt was subdivided into 96 zolotniks, and each zolotnik into 96 dolyas. This respective metric system can be observed in the early 19th century Roubles, which state that the coin weights '4 zolotniks and 21 dolyas of silver'. But just as a carat the zolotnik can be both a unit of weight and of fineness. The stamp '96' on this bar therefore does not only declare the weight of the bar, but also confirms its silver content as being equal to 96 zolotniks. As the bar in its entirety weighs a Russian pound and such a pound weighs 96 zolotniks, this bar is thus confirmed to consist of pure silver.
