CHINA, Western Hàn dynasty. temp. Xuāndì-Yuándì. 73-33 BC. Æ "Chicken Eye" Wuzhu (12mm, 0.72 g). Wu Zhu in zhuànshū Hànzì (seal script) characters / Blank. BN Chinoises II 306-7; Hartill 10.29. Green patina. Fine. With handwritten Japanese dealer's envelope.

From the Elmer H. Frantz Collection.

These miniscule "chicken eye" Wuzhu can be dated quite precisely to the reigns of Xuāndì and Yuándì. Their function, however, remains unclear, with some numismatists suggesting a funerary role for the little coins.
