ROMAN EMPIRE; Lucilla, wife of Lucius Verus. Circa 164 AD. Æ Sestertius (20.42 gm; 30 mm). LVCILLAE AVG – ANTONINI AVG F Draped bust r., hair in waves and coiled up in a chignon at back of head. Rev. PIE – TAS / S – C Pietas, draped, veiled and diademed, standing l., strewing with her outstretched r. hand incense out of a box held in her l. over garlanded altar. RSC 54; BMC M. Aurelius 1161; RIC M. Aurelius 1756. Lovely strike on anice broad flan. Light smoothing on the field. Choice EF. Nice green patina. Very rare. " Lucilla was the second of six daughters born to the emperor Marcus Aurelius and his wife Faustina II. She was a twin of Titus Aurelianus Antoninus, but he died within a year of their birth. When the emperor Antoninus Pius died in 161 and was succeeded by Lucilla's father and his co-heir Lucius Verus, Lucilla was betrothed to Verus in a gesture meant to tie the two emperors lienage as well as their collective Imperial duties".
