KINGS of MACEDON. Demetrios I Poliorketes. 306-283 BC. AR Tetradrachm (27.5mm, 17.13 g, 12h). Salamis mint(?). Struck circa 300-295 BC. Nike, blowing trumpet and holding stylis, standing left on prow of galley left / Poseidon Pelagaios standing left, preparing to throw trident; monograms flanking (the left erased in die?). Newell –; HGC 3, 1012a. Lightly toned, some die wear, light cleaning marks and trace of doubling on reverse. Good VF. Very rare, unpublished issue.

The monogram in the right field appears to be identical to that on the reverse of Newell 23, reverse die 60. Newell thought that the monogram was engraved over an HP monogram (see n. 20), but a close inspection of the coin on his pl. III shows that his reading of the monogram was incorrect. The monogram in the left field here appears to be a ligate ΘE, but it seems that the celator attempted to erase the monogram in the die. Such a monogram is unknown on the coinage of Demetrios.
