Netherlands New Guinea Nieuw-Guinea 1; 2 1/2; 5 Gulden 2.1.1950 Pick 4a; 5a; 6a Three Examples PMG Very Fine 30 (3). Three scarce denominations from the first series of this Dutch territory. Its currency was very short lived, and has a pretty interesting history. This variation of Gulden was introduced in 1950 after the independence of Indonesia in 1949. One is astounded by the size of the area, West New Guinea, that remained under Dutch control until 1963. After the first issue in 1950, the Dutch introduced a new family of notes bearing the name "Netherlands New Guinea" in 1954, mainly to reaffirm its claim to the territory after political tensions with Indonesia regarding the area.
