Puerto Rico Caja de Ahorros de Ponce 5 Pesos ND (1874-79) Pick UNL Remainder PMG Very Fine 20. A rare Remainder from a private Bank whilst under Spanish rule. Currency supply was problematic to the island, and it heavily depended on mostly Mexican and Venezuelan coinage. In 1865 Caja de Ahorros de San Juan attempted to issue currency to fulfil the public need for a local currency, but went under 1879. This initial Bank paved the way for two additional branches to be opened in Mayaguez and Ponce. The Ponce branch starting issuing banknotes in 1872, but halted issuances from 1876 to 1882. It was at this time that it reapplied for a fresh 10 year permit, but was not granted and had to shut its operations permanently. We have not sold anything from this elusive Bank, and the only price realization we could find was for a cancelled 50 Peso, Pick S110, that sold in 2012 for just under $12,000. Historically important, and a chance not to be missed. https://currency.ha.com/itm/world-currency/puerto-rico-caja-de-ahorros-de-ponce-5-pesos-nd-1874-79-pick-unl-remainder-pmg-very-fine-20/a/4036-25711.s?type=DA-DMC-CoinArchivesCurrency-WorldPaperMoney-4036-04212022 HID08706262019 © 2022 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
