From the inventory of a North American dealer.

The genikos kommerkiarioi were high ranking functionaries who organised and supervised the economic life of an Apotheke or several Apothekai - a state warehouse located within the Empire where commerce was regulated by the State. Officials such as the owner of this seal had the privilege of depicting the emperor and the imperial family on their seals.

The career of Peter, the owner of this seal, is attested to by a number of seals (please see BLS I, p. 146, Table 2). Whilst no particular Apotheke is referred to on this seal, others state that he was responsible for the Apothekai of Isauria (BLS I 154) and the Armeniakoi (BLS I 155) and served during both the reigns of Constans II and Constantine IV.
