Matienus AR Denarius. Rome, 179-170 BC. Helmeted head of Roma to right; [X (mark of value) behind] / The Dioscuri on horseback riding to right, each holding couched spear, and wearing chlamys, cuirass, and a pileus surmounted by star; M[AT] monogram below, ROMA in exergue. Crawford 162/2a; BMCRR Italy 399; RSC Matiena 2. 3.03g, 17mm, 2h.
Very Fine.
From a private English collection.
The area of flatness below Roma's head was perhaps caused by hammering to flatten the coin and allowed some of the flan to be cut off. The coin was then 're-valued' with an engraved 'X'. This theory is supported by the coin's low weight.
