Near Very Fine. Very Rare; rated R4 by Calicó, only six other examples on CoinArchives.

From a private European collection.

Vespasian and Titus' victory in the First Jewish War resulted in a ostentatious triumph in Rome described in detail by the historian, and former slave of Vespasian, Josephus, in his work 'Wars of the Jews' (VII.V). The magnificent procession is alluded to on the reverse of this rare aureus, which is among the earliest struck during Vespasian's reign. It had been almost three decades since Rome had last been witness to a triumph headed by a legitimate Emperor (after Claudius' victory in Britannia in 43), and it not only helped in some way heal and unite the citizens after the harrowing 'Year of The Four Emperors' (68-69) but also laid the foundations for what was to be a generally stable and successful dynastic rule by the Flavians.
