Theodore I Comnenus-Lascaris or John III Ducas-Vatatzes(?). Emperors of Nicaea, 1208-1222 and 1222-1254, respectively. BI Aspron Trachy (22mm, 1.48 g, 6h). Facing bust of Christ Pantokrator / On left, emperor standing facing, wearing stemma, divitision, and chlamys, holding cruciform scepter in right hand, akakia(?) in left; on right, emperor standing facing, wearing loros, holding uncertain object in right hand. Fine, porous brown surfaces.

From the Iconodule Collection.

A perplexing coin. The way the two figures on the reverse are huddled close together, almost overlapping, and not holding a cross or other object between them as typically found on types with two emperors or emperor and St. Constantine, may suggest this is the result of an overstrike. With no trace of legend, attribution is difficult. The style of Christ, with stringy hair and a beard rendered by pellets, as well as the style of garments of the left hand emperor, are similar to what is found on some issues of Theodore I and John III of Nicaea, although this is only a very tentative attribution.
