PERU. Silver & Bronze Trans-Andes Railroad Medals, January 1, 1870.
50.5 mm; the silver medal weighing 68 gms. Antique steam train approaching a village, llama in foreground, three mountain peaks in background, inscription "FERRO-CARRIL CENTRAL TRANSANDINO/ SECCION DEL CALLAO A LA OROYA" above, "INJENIERO EN JEFE E. MALINOWSKI/ CONTRACTISTA ENRIQUE MEIGGS" below; Reverse: nineteen line inscription noting the blessing of the project and naming the many notables present at the ceremony, including President D. Jose Balta. Henry Meiggs, mentioned in the inscription, was an unscrupulous San Francisco contractor. Meiggs "borrowed" a book of signed city warrants, cashed them, and sailed off to South America before anyone was the wiser. He used the funds to become a railroad tycoon in western South America.EXTREMELY FINE-ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
