PERU. Silver & Bronze Trans-Andes Railroad Medals, January 29, 1870.
50.5 mm; the silver medal weighing 72.2 gms. For the initiation of the Arequipa to Puno section of the Trans-Andean railroad. Antique steam train on a viaduct approaching a village from the left, one major mountain peak in the background with a couple smaller hills; Reverse: Twenty-four lines of inscription noting the speakers and dignitaries present at the event, including President D. Jose Balta. The construction of this railway was the greatest project undertaken by the notorious San Francisco contractor Henry Meiggs (called Enrique on this Spanish language medal). Meiggs "borrowed" a book of signed city warrants, cashed them, and sailed off to South America before anyone was the wiser. He used the funds to become a railroad tycoon in western South America.EXTREMELY FINE-ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
