Little is known about the ancient city of Sermylia, located on the second "finger" of the Chalcidice. Its rare archaic coinage depicts a mounted warrior galloping along with spear at the ready, indicating that it excelled in producing cavalrymen. During the Persian Wars, Sermylia, perhaps reluctantly, supplied troops and supplies to the Persians, but it did not seem to suffer any Greek reprisals in the aftermath and became part of the Delian League alliance with Athens in the mid fifth century BC. In the following century it became a charter member of the Chalcidian League, but apparently it shared the fate of neighboring Olynthus and was leveled by Philip II in circa 348 BC, after which Sermylia disappears from the historical record.
