MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). AV stater (18mm, 8.56 gm, 12h). NGC Choice AU 4/5 - 4/5. Posthumous issue of Colophon, ca. 319-310 BC. Head of Athena right, hair flowing loose in thick waves and curled ends below and over left shoulder, wearing necklace and triple-crested Corinthian helmet pushed back on head, short intersecting curled crest ends, bowl decorated with coiled serpent right / AΛEΞANΔPOY, Nike advancing left, wreath in outstretched right hand, stylis cradled in left arm; ΣΩ monogram in outer left field, ΠAP monogram in left field below wing. Price -, cf. 1792 (drachm). Struck from highly artistic dies, nicely centered on tight, lustrous flan. Fiery orange toning on obverse.
