LYCIAN DYNASTS. Kherei (ca. 440-410/390 BC). AR stater (24mm, 8.53 gm, 3h). NGC AU 3/5 - 3/5, marks. Xanthus, ca. 400 BC. Head of Athena left, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet with upturned cheek flap, decorated with three laurel leaves and vine scroll; dotted border / KHEREI (Lycian), Athena seated right on dolphin, spear in right hand, left resting on shield on which owl is perched left; dotted border, all in incuse circle. Mørkholm-Zahle, Kherei 36. Vismara 166 and pl. XVII, 166. S. Hurter, "Der Tissaphernes-Fund," Essays Thompson, 1 and pl. 8, 1. Extremely rare. Struck from somewhat worn obverse die and superb reverse die on large, chunky flan.
