Leopold I gold 10 Ducat 1659 AU Details (Cleaned) NGC, Vienna mint, KM-Unl., Fr-258, Köhler-Unl., Horsky-Unl., Herinek-4, MzA-158, CNA-8-a-1. 34.57gm. Franz Faber von Rosenstock as mintmaster. Date reworked from 1657. Established by a firm and exacting strike, it is an especially rare occasion that a clearly cleaned coin nonetheless maintains such a palpable visual allure as does the piece seen here. Omitting serious evidence of contact, each element of the design appears firmly impressed and carefully rendered, the rims free of any serious dings or bends, all as a still canary color dominates throughout. Suggested by the Corpus Nummorum Austriacorum to have been reworked from the 1657 die, such indicates that these gold multiples were produced somewhat quickly following Leopold's accession to the throne the same year of the death of his father, Ferdinand III. Such makes it all the more remarkable that so much care was still taken in their production, which in all truth could only have been for a special occasion and/or international trade. Certainly among the earliest multiple Ducats of Leopold's reign.
