Leopold I gold 10 Ducat 1660-CA MS61 NGC, Vienna mint, KM-Unl., Fr-258, Köhler-Unl., Horsky-Unl., MzA-159, Herinek-6, CNA-10-a-2. 34.08gm. Andrea Cetto as mintmaster. A coin which can only be measured by "outlier" statistics, given its wholly striking quality and preservation, allowing for it to inspire as much awe today as it certainly would have during the 17th century. Whereas many gold multiples of this size have witnessed subsequent attempts at mounting alongside the commonplace contemporary practice of etching the coin's weight into the fields, neither has afflicted the piece seen here. Showing just the most minor evidence of contact in the fields given its 362-year age, the coin on the whole remains exceptionally appealing, luster glittering across the planchet. Leopold's bust--unique in gold--presents a still youthful portrayal of the young monarch, who had been thrust into the position only 2 years prior after a career intended for the clergy. NGC currently records only having certified a single other example, at AU55, reaffirming the treasured status of this specimen in the marketplace.
