"Peace of Lunéville" gold Specimen Medal 1801 SP61 PCGS, Bram-Unl., Horsky-Unl., Julius-Unl., cf. Essling-917 (in silver), Montenuovo-2328 (same). 40mm. 52.16gm. By Friedrich Heinrich Krüger. A very handsome medal from the early Napoleonic period, commemorating the treated signed between France (represented by Joseph Bonaparte) and Austria (represented by Count Ludwig von Cobenzl), which, together with the Peace of Amiens concluded the following year, would mark the end of the Second Coalition. By all indications an extremely rare piece in gold, the only other example in this metal of which we are aware was part of the collection of Archduke Sigismund III of Austria, sold by Adolph Hess in November 1933 (lot 1498). For the sake of completeness, we note some minor hairlining in the obverse fields, though this does not diminish nearly cameo contrasts.
