Republic silver Essai 5 Francs 1848 MS64 NGC, VG-3086, Maz-1290 var. (R3; there, with lettered edge), de Saulcy-Plate 46, 2. Plain edge. By Montagny. A fleeting Pattern issue of a scarcely seen type, and notably varying from the description in Mazard due to its plain edge rather than the described edge in relief. Though not certified as such, which likely comes down to a technicality, the offering possesses the full appearance of a Proof in hand, bearing both needle-sharp devices and significant reflectivity underlying a lilac-tinged metallic patina. The first example of this type that we have encountered, and a beautiful one at that, with only this sole representative having been certified by NGC to date.
