German States
Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Julius 9 Taler 1574 VF Details (Obverse Tooled) NGC, Heinrichstadt mint, Dav-LSA2, Knyphausen-Unl., Preussag Collection-1, Welter-548. Heinrich Veeber as mintmaster. Stamped with the incorrect denomination of 10 Talers (X). An always impressive type, standing as the first German multiple Taler, minted in a total of nine weights, ranging from 2 to 16 Talers. Most regularly struck from 10 Taler dies, this discrepancy is nominal and actual weight played a key role in Duke Julius' financial policy, as such coins could be issued to wealthy citizens at the declared value of 10 Talers, allowing the mint to retain a seignorage of 1 Taler per coin for the treasury. Rarely preserved in appreciable condition owing to their significant size, we have been able to locate only 4 other specimens in recent auction records, with notably no examples in this weight present in the Paramount Collection.
