Nürnberg. Free City gold 6 Ducat 1745-PPW MS60 Prooflike NGC, Nürnberg mint, KM309 (this coin), Fr-1908 (Rare), Erlanger-Unl., Kellner-273. 20.85gm. With the name and titles of Franz I. Struck from Taler dies (cf. KM307). Peter Paul Werner as mintmaster. Exhilarating and thoroughly gratifying, the coin at hand perfectly captures upon the notoriously medallic engraving of Nürnberg's gold multiples. Laden with mirrorlike characteristics against lightly frosted, sculpturesque motifs, the piece on the whole demonstrates the utmost attention to detail, from the features of the cityscape down to each individual edge denticle. Noteworthy as a type absent from both the Erlanger and Paramount collections, our research has revealed perhaps only 5 other examples having come to auction in the last 20 years, with this very coin serving as the plate in the Standard Catalog of World Coins. All-in-all, a fantastic specimen, and the sole representative within the certified population.
