Elizabeth I (1558-1603) gold Pound ND (1594-1596) MS61 NGC, Tower mint, Woolpack mm, Sixth issue, S-2534, N-2008, Schneider-799 var. (there, with mm to right of crown), Brown & Comber, "Notes on the Gold Coinage of Elizabeth I" (British Numismatic Journal Vol. 59, 1989), F10 (same dies). 11.25gm. (woolpack) | ELIZABETH • D' • G' • ANG' • FRA' • ET • HI' • REGINA •, crowned and ruffled half-length bust of Elizabeth left / (woolpack) SCVTVM • FIDEI • PROTEGET • EAM • (annulet stops), crowned Tudor shield flanked by E-R. Perhaps the most evocative and engaging of Elizabeth's gold issues alongside her unmistakable "Fine" Sovereigns, this impressive Pound proves exceptionally appealing, both for the type as a whole as well as the grade. Seemingly of even finer appearances than the Newman example (Heritage Auction #3029, January 2014, Lot 30119)--an MS62 and the last representative we handled from these dies--the present coin demonstrates a fully round, uncracked planchet, free of waviness and with striking definition to the details. Only the most scattered of wisps can be detected in the fields, with even these offset by the soft die polish lines that reside in the margins.
