George III gold Proof Pattern 2 Pounds 1820 PR61 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM-Pn82, S-3784, Schneider-Unl., Marsh-T1 (R3), W&R-179 (R3). Lettered edge. By Benedetto Pistrucci. Mintage: 60. Reportedly one of just 60 examples struck from only 4 obverse and reverse dies in celebration of the 60th year of George III's incredibly long reign, the 1820 Pattern 2 and 5 Pounds by Benedetto Pistrucci represent the final issues minted during the king's monarchy. A denomination that would not see circulation until the reign of his successor, who ironically would dismiss Pistrucci, the dies for this 2 Pounds were supposedly not completed until after the king's death, with William Wyon believed to have put the finishing touches on Pistrucci's famed engraving. Only the second example we have offered, the Cameo contrasts on this specimen can only be regarded as captivating--hard, mirrorlike reflectivity characterizing both faces alongside generous device frosting that makes the reliefs nearly "spring" from the flan. One of only a small handful to have come to auction in recent years, and significantly attractive for the assigned grade.
