George IV gold Proof 5 Pounds 1826 PR62 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM702, S-3797, L&S-27, W&R-213 (R3). Lettered edge. By William Wyon after Chantrey, reverse by Jean-Baptiste Merlen. Mintage: 150. One of the giants of the 19th-century British gold series, this first 5 Pounds minted for inclusion in a monarch's Proof set immediately proves striking to the prospective onlooker. Perfectly capturing the heyday of Wyon's engraving career prior to his dismissal and replacement by Pistrucci, the coin at hand positively beams with full mirrorlike reflectivity, characteristically sculpturesque detail residing over George's portraiture and in the reverse Hannoverian arms. For the sake of completeness we would note a tiny edge flaw on the reverse around 12 o'clock, causing a minor disturbance in the denticles, though little impact to the neighboring squared-off rims.
