Victoria Proof "Gothic" Crown 1847 PR65 NGC, KM744, S-3883, ESC-2578 (R2). Plain edge. N over inverted N in UNITA variety. Struck in pure silver. Incredibly well-preserved for this fleetingly rare Gothic Crown subvariety, awarded an R2 rating from English Silver Coinage as compared to the "Scarce" rarity assigned to the standard UN DECIMO edge type. However, of even greater note to the connoisseur, is this offering's unquestionably Gem Proof certification, an accolade solidified by its painstakingly precise strike, rendering an example that could nearly have been minted yesterday. A pattern of striated obverse tone overlays elements of blush and champagne, significantly brightening the planchet for what is typically a darkly patinated issue. For the sake of comparison, we would note that we recently sold a PR63 Cameo-graded piece for $132,000 in our January 2022 Platinum Night sale, and that just one PR66 and PR66 Cameo are presently certified finer than this coin.
