Victoria gold Proof Pattern Sovereign 1887 PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS, W&R-331 (R5), Marsh-58D (R6), DM-217. Reeded edge. Obverse by William Wyon, reverse by Jean-Baptiste Merlen. Rated an R5 by W&R, corresponding to a mere 6 to 10 specimens known. A simply stunning example of this rare Pattern Sovereign type, struck to needle-sharp clarity and barely visibly handled since being struck 135 years ago. Pristine, watery reflectivity bathes the entirety of the fields, which yield clear mirroring to several inches and provide a fitting canvas for Wyon and Merlen's designs. These are not only crisp and nearly undisturbed from contact, but also richly decorated in satiny mint luster, which produces a clear cameo contrast that remains discernible at nearly all viewing angles. A hint of ghostly tone overlies the open expanses alongside an undercurrent of copper-gold color that sweeps the entirety of both surfaces, amplifying the eye appeal and allowing for immeasurable viewing enjoyment. In so lofty a grade designation, it may be said that this elusive Pattern issue nears the pinnacle of possible preservation for its type, and indeed, only a single other example, ranking two points lower at "PR65," has been certified by PCGS to date.
