Mughal Empire. Akbar (AH 963-1014 / AD 1556-1605) gold Mohur AH 984 (AD 1576/1577) MS66 NGC, Ahmadabad mint, KM108.2, Wright-Unl., cf. BMC (Mughal)-57 (different date), Whitehead-120 (same), Hull-1211 (same). With date on obverse, written with Persian 4. A coin for which the moniker "impressive" does not remotely do justice, this coin very nearly appears as though it could have been minted yesterday. Boasting the mountainous calligraphic reliefs so emblematic of Mughal coinage in general and Akbar's issues in particular, even the individual strokes used to engrave each letter appear upon close examination, these mirrored by entrancing surface die polish. While Akbar's emissions of this date are known with both Arabic and Persian numeral 4's in the date, those with the Persian 4 are usually accompanied by a floral flourish above the word Allah on the obverse (cf. Heritage Auction #3014, April 2011, Lot 24370); we have not come across another example from this obverse die in the course of our research. For comparison, we would note that an MS65-graded example with Arabic 4 brought $18,000 in our January NYINC sale.
