Papal States. Pius VII gold "Canonization" Medal Anno VIII (1807) UNC Details (Mounted) NGC, Lincoln-2036 var. (in bronze), Modesti-281, Rinaldi-8 var. (in silver). 43mm (with bezel). 35.97gm. A very scarce gold medal struck for the canonization of the five new saints. Produced in admirably high relief to the obverse, with impressive detail realized throughout the Pope's delicately rendered hair and textured robe, the surfaces revealing fine handling hairlines, but the piece on the whole remaining undeniably Mint State and lustrous. Rather than detracting from the medal's appearance, the ornate bezel within which it is mounted serves as an ideal frame to this broad specimen, fitting quite naturally both in style and color. Rare and desirable, this offering will easily be met with spirited bidding.
