Sardinia. Vittorio Emanuele II 5 Lire 1861 (Eagle)-B MS65 NGC, Turin mint, KM144.1, Mont-61 (R2), Gig-50 (R2), Pag-390. Mintage: 12,237. Simply captivating in hand, and much above the typically expected quality for this scarce type, which rarely appears in Mint State, let alone sublime gem condition. The strike is not only firm, but needle-sharp, resulting in the greatest execution of detail, down to the individual hair strands on Vittorio Emanuele's bust and crisply rendered lines in the reverse shield. Glassy, shimmering luster unveils itself upon a subtle turn of the wrist, embellishing Emanuele's generously frosted portrait and revealing strong elements of seafoam and golden iridescence within. With even close inspection revealing not a noteworthy flaw and given the offering's position as the single-finest example seen by NGC to date, an obvious contender for any elite collection of world or Italian crowns!
