Venice. Alvise Pisani gold Osella of 4 Zecchini Anno I (1735)-ZF MS64 NGC, KM-X271, Fr-Unl., CNI-VIIIb.94, Paolucci II-401, Bellesia-Unl., Montenegro-2597. 13.94gm. Zorzi Foscolo as mintmaster. An incredible minting in gold of this typically silver emission, struck upon Alvise Pisani's accession as Doge. The first such example we have encountered, with just a single other in auction records of the past 20 years, the coin at hand is remarkable not least for the exactitude of its strike--perfectly centered on a fully round flan embellished with shimmering golden luster. Interestingly, although the type is well documented by both Paolucci and the Corpus Nummorum Italicorum, it is altogether absent from Bellesia's Monete Italiane d'Oro, suggesting a paucity of sales records before the last several years. Notably absent from our sale of the Paramount Collection last year, and the perfect addition to even the most advanced collections of Italian gold.
