Danzig. Free City gold "Aegidius Strauch - Return from Prison" Medal of 3 Ducats 1678-Dated MS62 NGC, Danzig mint, cf. Raczynski-258 (composition not stated), HCz-4045 (R2), CNG-646a. 31mm. 10.38gm. Unsigned (possibly by Johann Höhn the Younger). An exceptionally rare commemorative type in gold, and the only such example that we have been able to locate coming to auction in recent decades. Imbued with an undoubtedly Prooflike finish throughout, the piece caps its careful preservation with a delicate layer of frost over the reliefs and pronounced raised rims.

A pastor and rector in Danzig, Aegidius (Polish: Idzi) Strauch preached fiercely against the Catholics of the city, leading to his ultimate dismissal at the urging of the Bishop of Kujawski in 1673. However, owing to the backing of the mob, Strauch was reappointed as a preacher in 1674, though his continued quarrels led him to relocate, during which he was again arrested. It was not until 1678 that he was released and allowed to return to Danzig.
