Nicholas II gold "Death of Alexander III" Medal 1894-Dated MS62 NGC, Diakov-1093 (R4), Smirnov-1061. 81mm. 387.87gm. By P. Stadnitsky. Simply put, awe-inspiring. Rarely do we find ourselves the opportunity to handle a Medal of such historical and monumental proportion, struck upon the premature death of Russian Tsar Alexander III at the age of 49, clearly a great loss as confirmed by the sheer size of the piece at hand. Displaying a stoic portrait in full dress uniform, a clear showing of leader's self-perceived strength, embellished with ornate epaulettes and decoration, all framed by an ouroboros signifying the infinity of life and continued reign of the Romanov family that had ruled Russia since the early 17th century. The reverse showcases an even more meticulous and ornate vignette of an angel comforting an allegorical representation of Russia in mourning. Struck in exceptionally high relief upon a most expansive golden canvas, the largest vintage gold issue this cataloger has handled, weighing in at approximately 111 ducat weight. We've been able to locate just three examples brought to market in the last two decades, and always a significant highlight in each instance. While an abundance of grade-defining wisps are noted to the low-lying fields beneath, this does little to detract from the aura of importance emanating from our specimen, a piece certainly worthy of the most discerning collector's attention.
Purportedly from the descendants of Alexander Friedrich Konstantin von Schleswig, Holstein-Gottorf Oldenburg Prince (1844-1932), grandson of Katharina Pawlowna (1788-1819), Queen of Württemberg, daughter of Tsar Paul I and Maria Fiodorovna.
