Mallorca. Charles II gold 1/2 Escudo 1695 MS62 NGC, KM26, VQR-9381, Bover de Rosselló-4, Plate IX, 58, Cal-806 = Cay-7724 = Oro Macuquino-91c (Extremely Rare) = ORC-1203 (Extremely Rare). 1.68gm. Gaspar de Puigdorfila as mintmaster. A substantial series rarity, which Tauler Fesser reports is one of only two examples known to him having come to auction, the other sold by Áureo & Calicó in April 2009 (Auction 218, Lot 1926); a specimen also occurred in the Vidal Quadras y Ramón Collection, although it is not illustrated. Produced following a Royal Decree of 1693 that established an official value for the gold coinage of Mallorca, this emission was struck for just a single year before Charles' death in 1700, to be resumed only once with the same design under his successor, Philip V, in 1703 (represented by 3 examples in auction records of the last 20 years). Struck on a somewhat irregular flan with a notable die shift in the date, the piece nonetheless shows all evidence of careful preservation and minting, die polish appearing throughout the fields alongside a pervasive honey-golden luster. The first 1/2 Escudo minted under the Kings of Spain, and of the utmost desirability.
