Philip V gold 8 Escudos 1704 S-P AU53 NGC, Seville mint, KM260, Cal-2271, Cay-9896. S-8-P-8 variety. By all indications, a much rarer subtype than the more often seen 8 S 8 P variety, of which we have been able to locate just a single other example having come to auction in recent years--originating from the 1715 Plate Fleet. To date, one of only two straight-graded examples at NGC, the piece shows a micro-fine surface granularity throughout, perhaps suggesting time spent underwater, though this has in no way diminished the coin's aesthetic appeal.
