Ferdinand VI gold 8 Escudos 1749 M-JB AU Details (Obverse Scratched) NGC, Madrid mint, KM379, Cal-778, Cay-10853, Onza-594 (Few known specimens). A bust type well known to collectors of the Spanish Colonial series, and yet of the utmost scarcity when located on emissions of Madrid. Utilized for only two dates--this and 1747--both of which are known from only a handful of specimens, this distinctively baroque portrait is known to have been the work of Francisco Sáez, a silversmith and artist of some prominence of the period, who was also known to be a favorite of Ferdinand's wife, Barbara of Braganza. It has been supposed that the influence of the Queen might have played a key role in the adoption of Sáez's engraving, which bypassed the order of seniority within the mint for the creation of a new bust design, which should have fallen to the Engraver General (Grabador general). Admitting just a light scratch before the bust, the otherwise minor friction seen on the piece does nothing to dim its visual quality, a tilt from end-to-end unleashing waves of glassy luster across the surfaces.
