JUDAEA. Bar Kokhba Revolt (AD 132-135). AR zuz (18mm, 3.11 gm, 12h). NGC Choice AU 3/5 - 3/5, overstruck. Undated issue of Year 3 (AD 134/5). Simon (Paleo-Hebrew), name within wreath of thin branches wrapped around eight almonds, medallion at top, tendrils at bottom / For the freedom of Jerusalem (Paleo-Hebrew), fluted oenochoe, handle on left; upright willow branch to right. GBC 6, 6545. GBC 5, 1427. TJC 283.
Overstruck on denarius of Vespasian, the entire outline of the portrait of the emperor visible on the obverse, as well as legend fragments in the almonds and legend fragments in the fields on the reverse. One has to wonder if the mint workers took personal pleasure in overstriking denarii of the Flavian Era considering the extent of coinage Vespasian issued in the Judaea Capta series.
