Ancients
SYRIA. Antioch(?). Nero (AD 54-68), with Divus Claudius. AR tetradrachm (26mm, 14.22 gm, 12h). NGC XF 4/5 - 4/5. Uncertain Syrian mint, ca. AD 63-68. NERO CLAVD DIVI CLAVD F CAESAR AVG GER, laureate head of Nero right; star behind / DIVOS CLAVD AVG GERMANIC PATER AVG, laureate head of Claudius right. RPC I 4123. Prieur 48. McAlee 270. Superb example of the type with the two easily recognizable portraits of both emperors.

From the Silas Collection

The mint location for this large series of tetradrachms with Latin legends has long puzzled numismatists, with speculation ranging from Caesarea in Cappadocia to Tyre in Phoenicia. The style and fabric conform to the major Syrian mint of Antioch, but Latin legends are usually found only on bronzes struck in the city. Prieur tentatively assigns the issue to a "second mint" of Antioch, and McAlee accepts the issue as one of Antioch. This variety, with no symbols in the fields, is the rarest.
