The obverse of this famous type likely alludes to the "liberation" of Rhodes from forces loyal to Cassius and Brutus, the assassins of Caesar, who had sacked the city and stationed a garrison there the previous year. Rhodes had been famous for its gargantuan Colossus, a bronze statue depicting the sun god Helios, which had lain in ruins since it was felled by an earthquake in 226 BC.
