Ancients
Constantine I the Great, as Caesar (AD 307-337). AV aureus (20mm, 5.31 gm, 11h). NGC XF 5/5 - 1/5, pierced. Antioch, ca. July AD 306-December AD 308. CONSTANTI-NVS NOB CAES, laureate head of Constantine I right / HERCVLI-CONS CAES, Hercules standing facing, head left, nude but for lion skin draped over left arm, resting right hand on grounded club, three apples of the Hesperides in left; crescent SMAΣ star in exergue. RIC VI -. Calicó -. Apparently unpublished. No examples in sales archives.

This coin would have had to have been struck in the 18-month period during which Constantine I was elevated to Caesar and before he was named Filius Augustorum. Neither RIC nor Calicó allude to this issue having been produced for Constantine at Antioch. In fact, the last example in RIC VI of this reverse type for this mint was an R5 (unique) rated specimen for Severus II as Caesar (Voetter, Windisch-Graetz Catalogue, 4344). Depeyrot lists a later example (23/2 from AD 309) minted under Constantine as Filius Augustorum, citing a specimen sold by Christie's (7 October 1986), lot 268. An example of Depeyrot 23/2 (same example from Christie's sale?) was sold by Stack's Bowers in Sale 174 NYINC (11 January 2013), lot 5459.
