Ferdinand VI gold 8 Escudos 1751 So-J AU (Altered Surfaces), Santiago mint, KM3, Cal-824, Onza-644. An issue that typically appears with soft strikes and die breaks, the example offered showing both sides deeply struck. The reverse has a needle-point shield and highly attractive semi-Prooflike fields, while the obverse exhibits a conditional qualifier for which this piece is not eligible for encapsulation: though the motifs are also very crisp and bold, it's clear the alteration/movement of metal right in front of the King's face. Analyzing the coin at an angle, the outline of a probable lamination defect is visible, a common flan flaw of these issues. To "correct" such mint deficiency, the coin seems to have undergone a smoothing of the area, to disguise such imperfection. Altogether, an affordable example of this sought-after type.
