Ferdinand VI gold 8 Escudos 1754 So-J AU Details (Cleaned) NGC, Santiago mint, KM3, Cal-829, Onza-648 (Rare). This scarce subtype - labeled as "tipo B" in Onza's reference and "reduced-diameter" by Carlos Jara in his work on the early issues of the Santiago mint - was struck between 1753-1758 and is easily identified by its reduced diameter compared to the earlier 1750-1753 issues and by the different design of the shield around the golden fleece. The present example shows well-defined motifs and a light amber tone to the surfaces.
