Philip IV Cob 8 Reales 1652 NR-PoRMS AU53 NGC, Nuevo Reino mint, KM7.1, Cal-1549, Cay-6451. 27.20gm. An iconic colonial Colombian issue, bearing the trademark assayers initials PoRMS, for Pedro Ramos (1651-1676). Always an intriguing series with more than ten assayer initial combinations, most of which are encountered relatively infrequently, and almost never in as fine a condition as the example witnessed here. Only a handful have been certified by NGC, this example ranking as the second finest across all of Ramos's 8 Reales, which are more often encountered in details grades as sea salvaged pieces. The current representative showcases an exemplary battleship-gray surface enveloping deeply engraved devices and limited only by trivial instances of handling friction and striking weakness typically seen with these early Cobs to cap the assigned grade.
